Panchakarma

Pancha refers to five and karma refers to the therapy that brings about homeostasis by way of evacuation of accumulated Dosha. Panchakarma can be administered both in a healthy, as well as the diseased person. When a healthy person undergoes Panchakarma, it has a preventive, restorative, and rejuvenative effect on the body .In the diseased person it helps in detoxification and bringing about the equilibrium state of health.

Five Procedures of Panchakarma are:
1. Vamana (Therapeutic emesis)
2. Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation)
3. Basti ( Enema of decoction and Medicated oil)
4. Nasya (Nasal administration of drugs)
5. Raktamokshana (Blood letting)

Stepwise procedure of Panchakarma:
Panchakarma comprise of following stages:

  • A. PURVAKARMA
    These are the preliminary procedures by which the body is prepared for the main Panchakarma therapies. Purvakarma includes:
    DIPANA- PACHANA (Enhancing the Digestive fire)
    SNEHANA (Oleation)
    SWEADANA(Sudation)
  • B. PRADHANKARMA
    The five main procedures after purvakarma are:
    VAMANA - Expulsion of Doshas(toxins) by inducing medicated vomiting for balancing of Kapha dosha specially.
    VIRECHANA - Expulsion of Doshas by inducing purgation (loose motion) for balancing Pitta dosha specially.
    NASYA - Nasal medications given through nostrils for cleansing of nose, throat and head region.
    ANUVASANA BASTI - This is decoction based Enema for detoxification of the vata dosha specially Dosha.
    ANUVASAN BASTI - This is oil based enema for rejuvenation and giving strength to the body.

  • C. PASCHATKARMA
    The post Panchakarma procedures which must be followed after Panchakarma to restore the physical strength and optimize the functioning of digestive fire are known as Paschatkarma. It includes SAMSARJAN KARMA (DIET REGIMEN) - Some Soups made from light vegetables, lentil or pulses with ghee in a particular ascending dosage form.
    VIHAR (BEHAVIORAL REGIMEN) - Rest for particular days is recommended. Some other behavioral restrictions in daily life, sexual life etc are prescribed.
